NYC Club Dress Code: What to Wear in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens
· Updated:
What to wear to a club in NYC depends on the borough: Manhattan's table clubs expect smart, upscale clothes and turn away athletic wear, shorts and caps, while most Brooklyn and Queens dance clubs are come-as-you-are. The door has the final say everywhere, so when in doubt, dress one notch up.

Manhattan table clubs: no athletic wear, shorts or caps
The Manhattan rule is consistent: no sportswear. Marquee asks for 'upscale and trendy' and turns away shorts and athletic wear; Somewhere Nowhere says the same. Nebula lists the longest set of no's for men (athletic wear, shorts, tank tops, tracksuits) and no sneakers for women. Harbor adds flip-flops and work boots. The Fleur Room and Paradise Club are described as strict and upscale, and The Box as 'polished'. Musica's listing rules out sneakers, athletic wear and caps.
In practice, that means dark jeans or trousers, a shirt or a smart top, and clean shoes that are not trainers. A blazer is never wrong at Marquee or Paradise Club. The door still decides.

Selective downtown doors
A few downtown places are hard to get into for reasons that have little to do with a written rule. Jean's on Lafayette St, a restaurant with a club downstairs, is known for one of the hardest doors in the city. Gospël, a few blocks south, is listed with a 'be interesting' door and no sneakers. Paul's Casablanca on Spring St works on a door-only basis; we found no published dress code, so dress for the theme of the night and ask us before you go.
Brooklyn and Queens: come as you are
On the dance-music side of the city, the door cares more about how you behave than what you wear. Nowadays and Good Room are both described as come-as-you-are. Gabriela in Williamsburg has no guest list and no dress code; one listing sums it up as 'Docs or Dolce'. Wear something you can dance in for hours, and shoes that can handle a long night.

Dress for the theme: House of Yes
House of Yes in Bushwick runs a theme every weekend and wants you to dress for it, from glitter to costume. It also has strict consent rules, no photos on the dance floor and no re-entry. Our House of Yes guide covers what people wear there.

The Eagle on W 28th St, Chelsea's leather and fetish bar-club, has a weekend dress code of leather, rubber, denim or uniform, according to an LGBTQ+ guide. Weeknights are more relaxed.
Techno rooms: dark, comfortable and phone away
At BASEMENT, under Knockdown Center in Maspeth, the rules are about devices rather than clothes: no phones, photos or video on the floor, and the club has banned smart glasses too. Most techno crowds wear black and comfortable shoes; nobody will check your outfit, but they will check your camera.
