The Hardest Doors in NYC: Selective Clubs and How They Work

· Updated:

The New York clubs with the hardest doors are Jean's in NoHo, Gospël in Nolita, The Box on the Lower East Side, Silencio in Midtown West and Paul's Casablanca in SoHo. Each one is selective in a different way: some are table-only, some are door-only, and some run like a members' room without being one.

Quick answer

Jean's

Jean's, at 415 Lafayette St, is a restaurant with a club in the basement, and VinePair called it the club that defines downtown cool, door included. In June 2026 Cultured covered a Pride party there and described its buzzy club nights. Nobody publishes how the door decides, but a table booked ahead is the most reliable route in.

Gospël

Gospël, at 281 Lafayette St, has been a restaurant-club since 2019, with deep and tribal house and live acts. Nylon wrote it up as one of the city's exclusive nights out, and the door is known for asking guests to be interesting rather than just well dressed. Its listed nights differ between sources, so check with us before going.

The Box

The Box, on Chrystie Street, is a cabaret with burlesque, drag and late shows. Entry is by table, and walking in without a reservation is unlikely. That's what makes it hard: it isn't about the line, it's about booking.

Silencio New York

Silencio, the New York sister of the Paris club David Lynch designed, opened on Feb 15, 2024 at 303 W 57th St with interiors by Harry Nuriev. It runs Thursday to Saturday nights with DJs, live acts and art, works like a members' club, and admits guests mainly through tables.

Paul's Casablanca

Paul's Casablanca has been at 305 Spring St since 2016. W Magazine called it the nightclub New York had been waiting for. There are no tickets: the door opens at 10pm from Wednesday to Sunday and decides on the night, with theme parties like Paul's Dolls on Wednesdays.

What exclusive means in practice

  • A table: at The Box and Silencio, booking a table is how you get in.
  • A door: at Paul's Casablanca and Gospël, the person at the door decides on the night.
  • A reservation: The Blond takes guests by reservation only after 10pm.
  • A dinner: at Jean's the restaurant and the club share a building, but they are separate rooms.

Where do celebrities party in NYC?

We don't publish celebrity sightings: they change every week and we can't verify them. Private members' clubs are also outside this guide, and so is Avenue Sky Lounge at Edge, which its operator describes as a cocktail lounge for private events rather than a club.
